President Gerald Ford is assassinated in Sacramento in 1975 (in real life he was not hit by the gunshots) and appointed Vice President Nelson Rockefeller succeeds to the presidency. It is the first time in American history that three presidents serve in a single term.

In 1976, President Rockefeller norrwoly defeats Ronald Reagan in the primries and now faces Jimmy Carter in the general election. How does it turn out?

Who is appointed by Rockefeller as new Vice President (he runs with his Vice President). Usually this guy would also become president, as Rocky died in January 1979 of a heart attack.

I would also like to see a 1980 scenario under this if Rocky wins and his VP also becomes prez.

Carter wins, in an almost complete north-south divide.

Carter (D)-286
Rockefeller (R)-252

Rockefeller wins with nation in mourning, I also question if Reagan would actually run against him with the turmoil of the Ford assassination coming so closely to the 76' primaries. This would have been a very difficult time to have Watergate, An assassination and an election all back to back. This would have been the second 1968 so to speak.

Also keep in mind Rocky passed away in 1979 in the real time line so if that played out the same America would also have two presidents in the 1977-1981 term. Very chaotic.
