This sanctimonious busybody was asked to intervene in determining the child's last name, and yet still felt compelled to force her own worldview upon the parents' choice of first name as well.

Small government, indeed.

Someone Jewish should have stood up in the room and cried 'No he hasn't!'

I thought the religious wingnuts were looking forwards to the coming of the Antichrist.  So why would one try to forbid him from being properly named?

stories of religious people acting stupid-ly are a dime a dozen, why'd you feel it necessary to post a couple?

Eh, I suppose there's an argument for stopping people from giving their kids inflammatory names (Hitleristhegreatest Smith could cause problems) but I doubt that is the case here.

Right idea, but wrong person to do it and definitely the wrong reasoning.

On Yahoo it said the mom was appealing, so this'll likely be reversed by a less-insane higher court.

'Messiah' is enough of a flashpoint that it could easily, perhaps more easily than not, cause the kid serious problems later on in life, although he could just go by DeShawn or a nickname in that case. In any case the mere fact that it's a title associated with a religious figure is, in itself, nowhere near a good enough reason to overreach and make a decision like this against the parents' wishes.

Messiah was the 387th most common baby name in 2012.

By contrast, my name was 718th.

I mean, she couldn't have rejected the name on aesthetic grounds? LOL - No, she had to get on her religion to do it. It would offend her deity. So I wonder what country she thinks this is and I wonder by what basis does she think legal decisions are arrived at? God told Moses? She'd be an interesting case study.

Perhaps they were naming their son after the famous French physicist and Resistance fighter who died earlier this year. I used his text in grad school.

I wonder what the reaction would be if a non-Hispanic couple named their son Jesus.

I'm not sure. Jesus was Jewish though and therefore of middle eastern decent.

Anecdote time.  My freshman year I lived in the same dorm as God.  It was all good because by His will we went to the Elite Eight in the NCAA tourney that year.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_Shammgod

God didnt like showing up for class either.

Some people should not be allowed to name their poor children. <.<

So what legal grounds did the judge strike this name down on? I thought the US had no name laws as we do in other countries. Did she actually have a legal reasoning or just religious mumbo jumbo?

Don't get me wrong, it's a terrible, terrible name, but unless you have statue that say you can't be named that, it's clearly a violation of judicial powers.
