Hey, question about Social Security

(1/4) > >>

quiksilverx181:
Hey, Im not very good with politics, but I am taking Political Science 2 in college for my General Education, and I have to write an essay on Social Security, can you guys help me get started? I tried searching, but theres so much information, and I am confused, I hope you dont mind helping me start off?
Heres the prompt:
You are a representative in the United States House of Representatives.  State your support or opposition to Bush's proposal to partially privatize Social Security.  Be sure to look at the origins of SSI, success, issues of solvency and competing ideas.  Have fun, add some flare and write with persuasion.  Again, an A paper will have at least 3 outside sources, be articulate, use good grammar, answer the question and be 2-3 pages.

Essay is Due Wednesday, so all the help i can get is appreciated, thanks

A18:
Hi.

Basically, it depends if you like money or not.

quiksilverx181:
Well, dont most people like money? More depth please?

Favor or oppose privatization?  Well, I oppose and can give you some arguments.  The main argument I'll make is while the market provides an average annual return of 11% (based on the S&P 500), the president will need to borrow an additional $1-2 trillion to fund this drastic plan.  SSI has thusfar been a very good means since its inception in 1933 of reducing the poverty rate amongst senior citizens and allowing them to be independent of their adult children who have their own children to care for.  If not for the recent GOP raiding of the SSI trust fund, there would be a large surplus (not sure of the amount), which would drastically reduce the phony "crisis" George W. Bush is making this out to be.

What President Bush and the majority (though not all) of the GOP are trying to make the Democrats into a "do nothing" party regarding this issue.   He also wants the GOP to be a younger person's party because Kerry whooped his ass among 18-30 year olds by adding these private accounts.  In my opinion, the $1 trillion in added debt will do more to hurt us than giving us the option of private accounts in the long run despite the 11% return on the S&P 500 since 1933.  The simplest way to solve this issue would be to raise the cap on wages that are SSI taxed from $90,000 to $140,000.

and for an articulation of the case for partially privatizing Social Security, read this essay from the Ludwig von Mises Institute:
http://www.mises.org/fullstory.aspx?Id=1751

for a review of the partial privatization proposal, the conservative Heritage Foundation is a good source of info:

and for its ideas on how to structure and regulate these accounts:

for counter-arguments from the left (note, it's in PDF format, so it will take a little while to load):

here's a comprehensive overview of the counter-arguments by the liberal Economic Policy Institute in this FAQ:

and you should read this Washington Post article on how Democrats and Republicans are working toward a compromise on reforming Social Security:
