To paraphrase Voltaire: "If Judas did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him."  Yet, that Judas was not instrumental in having Jesus be turned over to the Romans for his ultimate crucifixion is one of those details that only those who for their own religious purposes want to make the entirety of the story of Christ be nonfactual myth could seriously entertain. I would not be surprised if some aspects of the tale of Judas had been changed from reality to fit the needs of Christian doctrine, especially since the accounts in Matthew and Luke-Acts differ somewhat in what happened to him.
