This has been alluded to here before, but here's the most in depth explanation I've seen:

These are federal rules, and nominally effect any sitting governor who wants to run for federal office.  As the column explains, these rules restricted Perry's fundraising somewhat in 2012.  However, the broad appointment powers of New Jersey governors make it more difficult for them than most other sitting governors.  Also, New Jersey has its own "pay to play" rules on top of the federal rules, that would make it impossible for Christie to raise money from the financial sector without resigning.

Yeah... if he wants to run, this is nothing.

He might resign if it looks like he'll easily win, but I don't think he'll resign unless he wins the election.

Can't these corporate people just give to a Christie PAC instead?

They could.  Though of course, Christie's people are hoping they can give to both.

I mean, yeah, it's not impossible for Christie to run and forego that Wall Street money for his own campaign, and hope that the Super PACs cover it....but it's less than ideal.  We'll just have to see how it goes.  Maybe he'll try to hold on as governor during the primary campaign, and then resign if he wins the nomination (a la Bob Dole).

Other governors will face similar problems....like Cuomo.

That's what I think he should do. It'd be too much during the general, where he'll be mr moderate and see much more donations than among the primary audience of donors.

I'm fine with this

He may have to resign in order to run, thats the problem. Christie resigning after he wins "the election" is not the question at hand.

He needs to step aside till 2020. Let the conservative wing have the nod after several straight moderates getting the nod and either losing (in the case of HW, Dole, McCain, Romney) or screwing the pooch (W). Let the grassroots (Paul, Pence, Haley, Cruz, Lee)  have this one and win. For party unity maybe Krispy Kreme can have a cabinet position.

Be our guest if you want to lose in Kansas and Alabama.
