Just a random thought that came into my mind, what if the Edwards scandal broke in October 2008 and gave Edwards enough time to have him upset the nomination... Also lets say that instead of picking Cheney, Bush picked Guiliani as his VP... Without Obama, the result would be much closer... but how closer? also, with the Economy in collapse prove Guiliani I worse than someone who had an affair with someone while his wife has cancer?

We'd be seeing a Republican nominee in favor of gay marriage and a Democratic nominee that was against it. In any case, assuming Edwards' scandal doesn't break at all, he'd be due for a very comfortable victory thanks to combining white Southerners with anti-war liberals--aided by the Republicans nominating a not-so-Southern candidate. However, with the scandal breaking in October as you indicate--around the same time as the financial crisis, as I recall--the race goes into a tossup. Would the American people choose a man who had cheated on his cancer-stricken wife, or the party that seemed to have brought about the crisis? Would make quite an interesting race to be sure.

And also these are all pro-abortion candidates as well. The Conservative wing of the GOP (and the Paul supporters as well) will field a third party candidate and this race will be chaotic to say the least. Safe to say I'd support a third party in this go round.

Edwards would have either had to drop out or gotten demolished after the scandal about his illegitimate child broke out.
