During the primaries, Gingrich's eight best states were all historically part of the South. Was there a specific part of Gingrich's message that appealed to Southern Republicans or was this solely attributable to being a favorite son?

It's partially a favorite son factor vis-a-vis Santorum, but mainly it was the least-favorite non-son factor for Romney.

Southern and Conservative, pretty simple really (that and he put campaign resources there). Santorum was a so-con too but he didn't have a southern drawl and he was very much a "Yankee" even a conservative one.

Meanwhile Mitt was the northern Mormon businessman, again, not much appeal, and the Perry campaign collapsed.

He's from the deep south and was the most conservative out of the candidates with the exception of perhaps Ron Paul. I don't remember Gingrich doing as well as Romney or Santorum in the south though.

Is this a question?

Ron Paul was the most conservative, followed by Santorum proabably.

Although, ousted by his own party, reforms weren't fully implimented. Even as a reformer myself, as a Dem, term limits, like on lower federal judges, I can get use to and should of passed with a constitutional amendment.
