This actually isn't too bad of a suggestion, as any moderation of the GOP to attract the nearly 40% of whites that vote Democratic would literally kill the Democratic Party. If the Republicans can capture even 10% of that 40% of whites that continually vote for Democrats (I'm not sure how they would do this), the Democrats would be utterly devastated and unable to win, as they were in the 1980s and 1990s. The math is harder for the Republicans now, but it isn't impossible.

She has a great point that white turnout was very poor the last two elections (slightly poorer than black turnout I believe), and if both turnout could be increased slightly and the Republican margin could be increased by a few points the Democrats would lose massively on the electoral map:

Of course, a racially polarized political landscape with a "white party" on one side and a "non white party" on the other side would be a nightmare, for the country and for minorities especially. That's one of the reasons why, if you had asked me in 2006, I would have said it would have been better if the first minority president was a Republican. The parties seem to be ideologically distinguished enough to preclude this, for now.

Nope. This assumption that if you forced all those whites to vote a gun point, that most would vote Pub, is simply not supported by any evidence. In fact the evidence such as it is, is to the contrary. Non voting whites are not some sort of untapped Pub reservoir. Most tend to be unengaged low information types, more interested in going to dance clubs, and getting laid, and working out, and/or are just totally alienated from the public square, and find the whole thing at once boring and repulsive, and the cast of public characters a bunch of scheming self serving crooks.

While I agree this group is not necessarily heavily Republican, I do think on balance a higher turnout on their part would increase Republican vote in these crucial states:

That much is certainly true I believe. Hispanics tend to be driven more by economic issues, given their generally impecunious state. They want Obamacare as it were more than they want immigration "reform."

I was thinking more of an apolitical BRTD type actually than one of my boy toys. A smart Republican Party would adopt an anti-free trade position. This would help turnout those rust belt working class whites and basically deliver them the White House, while splitting the labor vote and essentially destroying the Democrats.

There's no way the Democrats could beat them on that issue, none whatsoever, especially if the Republicans followed through with it. A nationalist, protectionist GOP would essentially be unbeatable, if you ask me. They would capture working class white voters who are currently disengaged from politics, pick up a big chunk of the labor vote, and probably win over the Latino vote, especially if they emphasize social conservatism and all that jazz.

Umm...most Latinos are not "socially conservative" in the way that (most) white Evangelicals are.

The percentage of white voters that Democrats receive is fairly stable, between 1988 and 2012, it's fluctuated being 38-43%, so I'm not sure how much more the GOP could realistically peel off. Relying on one demographic for a win won't work, elections are won by building a broad spectrum of voters.

Perhaps the GOP's current strategy is to poison the well of politics by riling up their "base" with things like Benghazi, IRS, etc. while hoping that enough Democrats will stay home on Election Day?
