Nixon drops Agnew from the ticket, selecting Illinois Governor Richard Ogilvie as his running-mate.

Ed Muskie wins a hard fought battle for the Democrats nomination and selects Texas Governor Preston Smith as his running mate.

Muskie is able to lose semi-respectably, as a much better, centrist candidate.
