An interesting tidbit:
Up until a few years ago, I always pronounced Colorado "kah-loh-rae-doh", as I figured it was pronounced the same as "El Dorado", which I've always pronounced like that (using "rae" instead of "rah"). It took a few years of living in Indiana for it to rub off, but I did catch myself saying it just the other day.

I really have no clue how any of you are pronouncing these names from your posts.  "Vah"?  What the hell is that supposed to sound like?

Anyway:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXNKQW7QQFc
If you come here and say it any differently, you'd better tip double what you were about to to make up for it.

Yeah, these pronunciation threads are always awful because almost nobody can indicate pronunciation clearly.

This is why the IPA is such an amazing thing.

Agreed in theory, but for most of us you might as well be typing in Cyrillic.

Indeed.

In any case, I was talking to ilikeverin a couple months ago about how Spanish place names are pronounced in California English according to a complex but mostly regular pattern. Colorado and Nevada are both Spanish names, so in keeping with that pattern I pronounce them as /ˌkɑlɚˈɑdoʊ/ and /nɨˈvɑdə/ respectively. I am aware that the latter pronunciation is generally considered incorrect.

For those who don't read IPA, the bolded vowels are pronounced like the o in pot: Colorado, Nevada.

Much like Cyrillic, IPA takes a surprisingly small amount of effort to learn.

I vacillate between /ˌkʰɔːləˈɹɑːdoʊ/ and /ˌkʰɔːləˈɹædoʊ/, but I pretty much always say /nɨˈvædə/.
