I actually agree. We seem to be more concerned about protecting children from nudity and profanity, rather than bullying, exposure to violence, racial/sexual epithets, hate, where the latter group is more harmful to children. Even the male enhancement ads are more questionable than some profanity/nudity.

I'm sort of mixed. I don't philosophically oppose the change, but it means television is going to get a whole lot coarser.

God yes. I find the double standard of censorship(censoring language and the human body while allowing completely unchecked violence) absolutely ridiculous.

Of course. As a rule if you can pay for it and you're not trying to incite lawbreaking or hate you should be allowed on television.

What about the more important category of nudity?

The FCC shouldn't be involved in censorship in the first damn place.  Regulating frequencies is a huge and important task, but no, that's not enough, they must be involved in over the air television content for some stupid reason.

I agree. Government censorship of the airwaves should be considered an unconstitutional infringement upon the freedom of speech.

With that said, I don't know how much would really change as far as TV goes. This would only affect the broadcast networks and even though the FCC's reach doesn't extend to cable/satellite, non-premium networks still self-censor. I'd love to know why Comedy Central censors language on its programming. I don't even bother watching any roasts or stand-up if they're going to be censored.

Once you can say finks and shmikado on television, can you also say them on websites that schools might link to?

Public outrage in the digital world is easy enough to hear for stations to self regulate.

Yes, strongly. It ruins a movie for me when I have to either hear a bleep in mid-sentence or some ridiculous re-dubbing.

Yeah. Example: In the first Die Hard film, instead of "Yippie kai yay motherfu**er" they dubbed it over with "Yippie kai yay Mr. Falcon"

I have mixed emotions myself. The problem is that it may mean a large chunk of folks will feel that they just cannot partake of the public air waves at all (never know when the F word or a penis (or heavens forbid - a female nipple!) will pop out/into of the box. That bothers me. The idea is to make reasonable accommodations to allow most to partake of the commons as they choose. Depraved folks like myself can watch HBO.

This censorship is stupid and ridiculous. How can we get so caught up over nudity and swearing when we applaud and can't get enough violence? But everyone here pretty much agrees on that. Unfortunately not one single part of me thinks this censorship will end, we are years and years from this ever changing. We will continue living in the Stone Age of content in the media. Baba booey and f*** the FCC!

The FCC has outlived every justification for its existence and ought to be abolished. There's no reason why we can't manage the airwaves in the same way that we manage real property.

That's how they did it in the earliest days of radio broadcasting. Broadcasters staked a claim to a frequency and a market area, and they were awarded rights by the courts. Then the FCC came along and things changed.

Yes, as long as it's not allowed in the TV-G, TV-Y, or TV-Y7 categories.

Of course!  For far too long we have been protecting the innocent children from potty-mouths and boobies.  But legitimately debouched stuff like Ren & Stimpy can fly.  Neither should be censored, obviously, but I'd be much more concerned with my child watching violence/gross-out humor than seeing a pair of titties (which are always a joy).

*I'm assuming we are talking about breasts, here.  Gonna take a while before the Pres. is whipping it out on national TV.
