Lets assume Nelson Rockefeller wins the 1964 Republican Nomination and chooses 3 Term Idaho Governor Robert Smylie to be his running mate, how well would he do against Johnson/Humphrey discuss with maps.

Maybe this...

I don't have a lot of states flipping here. I think Rockefeller picks up FL and VA but loses AZ. He's more competitive in the northeast than Goldwater was but LBJ still sweeps it.

LBJ was way too strong in '64 for anyone to have a real chance against him.

Johnson: 457 (57%)
Rockefeller: 81 (42%)

Why would Rockefeller win the south? The only reason Goldwater won there is because of his opposition to the 1964 civil rights act.

Rocky's running-mate is named Smylie? Not a smart move. That would only remind people that Rockefeller divorced his wife in 1962 to marry a woman whose nickname was Happy.

The Deep South would not have tolerated having to choose between LBJ and Rockefeller.  The opening for George Wallace would have been even more obvious than if Nixon replaced Rockefeller as the Republican candidate.

How on earth would Rockefeller win the South like that!?
Anyway, here's my map:

Gov. Nelson Rockefeller (R-NY)/Gov. Robert Smylie (R-ID)- 347 (52% PV)
Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson (D-TX)/Sen. Hubert Humphrey (D-MN)- 191 (47% PV)
