Currently, the two main candidates for Jerusalem are the incumbent mayor Nir Barkat, who heads a local list, and Likud-Yisrael Beytenu candidate Moshe Leon.

Hey, can any Israelis tell me why Likud is backing someone other than Barkat? He backed them in the last election so I was expecting the favor to be returned.

Bibi basically does support Barkat, it's the local Likud party who haven't been happy with Barkat for a while and Lieberman who is a good friend of Leon's, who are supporting Leon.

Apparently, Labor breaking away from One Tel Aviv is part of an attempt by Yachimovich to create a unified national Labor brand at the local level.

Just came back from voting for Barkat.

Jerusalem is clearly getting the most attention, mostly because of the heavy involvement from national politicians.

polls are closed for an hour and a half but there aren't enough votes counted yet to know where things are going.

Barkat wins in Jerusalem.
Huldai in Tel Aviv.

It seems that Zuabi easily lost in Nazareth.

Yeah, all the changes happened in smaller cities. Incumbents won in the big cities.

Relatively liberal former Likud MK Carmel Shama Hacohen has been defeated in the Ramat Gan mayoral race by a high school principal named Yisrael Singer.

Former Kadima MK Zeev Bielski has defeated an incumbent to regain his old post as mayor of Ra'anana.

Netanyahu-supporting former Labor MK Yoram Marciano has been defeated by a Likud candidate in Lod.

In Elad, Yisrael Porush, son of former UTJ leader Mier Porush, has defeated a Shas candidate.

Run-off in Herzliya.

In Upper Nazareth, Likud incumbent defeated former Yisrael Beytenu MK Lia Shemtov.

Danny, know anything about the Herzliya race?

Hertzeliya was ruled until the last election by Meretz's Yael German, whom left the party to join Lapid and became an MK and minister of health. Replacing her temporarily as mayor was Yehonatan Yasur, also from Meretz. Yehonatan was considered favourite to win the election, but ended up with a disappointing third place. there will be a run-off between the top two Moshe Fadlon with 24.89% and Tzvika Hadar with 24.44%.

Haneen Zuabis run in Nazareth ended up an epic fail. The race is currently incredibly close with only 21 votes between the top 2 both with 43.2%, but Zuabi only got 10.4%...

Beer Sheva's incumbent mayor won the election with over 90% of the PV and his party won 15 out 27 council seats.

For Meretz (my party) this was the status.
- As expected we lost the mayoral race in Tel aviv (53-38-9), but doubled out strength in the city council getting 6 seats (out of 30) and we are the largest party.
- In Jerusalem we ran a joint list with Labour and failed with only 2 seats won in the council (both are Meretz, but we used to run alone and score 3).
- In Haifa we were 180 votes short of the bar (with me somewhere on the ballot too)
- In the affluent towns of the Sharon we were very successful: 6 seats in Raanana (5 last time), 4 seats in Kfar Saba (1 last time!), 2 seats in Ramat hasharon (same), 3 seats in Herzliya (same), 2 in Rosh Hayin (which is a very place for a left party to run in!), 1 in Bat Yam (same as Rosh Hayin), and so on.
- tripled our size in Ramat Gan and Givatim (3 seats in both)
- Our Arab section showed our very first municipal lists running and elected in many towns up north.

Overall I'm generally satisfied.

The interesting races were actually in the Haredi towns where Shas and Deri'i failed miserably

Other than Barkat's win, the party I voted for, Hitorerut (Awakening) went from 1 seat to 4 in the city council.

Should have guessed you are on of them Wink.
In Jerusalem it's interesting to note the split in the Ashkenaz Haredi camp and the "free choice" option given to Hassidic voter in the mayoral elections for the first time well... ever.

The Gurs did the same thing last time as well.

The results in my home town of Haifa are cancelled right now. 5K votes went AWOL over night!

Last night there were 87K votes and today after 5K of absentee votes (soldiers and such) were added there were only 86K votes on the registry.

A recount will be conducted in the morning to trace the error or determine if felony was a part in this

Well I was an observer yesterday through out the day and there were severe cases of forgery in many places. Local elections in Israel do resemble African free elections at times
