In 1936, Landon carried Assumption Parish with 60 percent of the vote, while losing by landslides in every other Louisiana county. Why? It went Democratic before and after this... so why did Landon win? Does anyone have any background info on this place?

Maybe some local industry was adversely effected by New Deal policies?

I started a thread about this a while ago; apparently the root of it is opposition to tariff decreases due to the importance of sugar in the area.
