Voters have often reacted badly to by-elections caused by circumstances such as these; often - though not always - worse than ones caused by scandal. Just something to be aware of.

...

LibDem report appears to be visible only via a microscope.

Shields Gazette say that Labour's vote has 'held steady' and provide us with the first funny picture of the night:

It makes you wonder why the Lib Dems put themselves through this immense embarrassment.

To be fair, the Monster Raving Loonies haven't outpolled them in a by-election.

Yet.

The Labour result of 50.5% is their second worst post war poll in South Shields. Only 46.5% in 1983 was worse.

In most of those elections there were only two candidates and, anyway, no one is pretending that this was a great result. Spin away regardless.

It's a dire result, but Labour done what they needed to: win comprehensively and have their vote hold up, so UKIP can't get away with their usual propaganda that their support is coming from all directions (which they especially try to tout when seeing some success in Labour areas).

I did say it'd be like Rotherham, but still, the liberal result more than makes up for it.

The declaration

Lady MacBeth rightfully at center stage

The next day's "celebrations" which could look quite "sad" especially when they march alone in the mainstreet
