This is just coming out now, though the events in question happened a year ago, when Gingrich and Santorum were running against Romney for the GOP nomination.  Incredibly, it looks like the two campaigns had some discussions about teaming up on the same ticket, though couldn't agree on who to lead it (!):

Just saw this. Surprised it took so long to come out.

What a shocker that the breakdown was over who would top the ticket! Tongue I don't think it would have been a good idea but it sure would have made things interesting.

The whole debate idea was brilliant if they could pull it off in a way that looked spontaneous.

Santorum was reluctant to become number two for rather obvious reasons.

I don't think I would have ever cried tears of joy any harder than if Newt pulled off an out of the blue withdrawal from the race during a televised debate.

And let's face it... If there's anyone who could pull it off, it's him.

I would've shat bricks, but it certainly would've made things interesting.
