A diverse group that unites around Nancy Pelosi?

'Kinda like the caucus before 2010.

Though she's been effective as Speaker, I do think the caucus needs a new leader, at least for electability purposes.

The Fix's take on why Sanford won. He's never lost a race before; I didn't know that.

Good points.

Can't Sanford still get convicted of trespassing?

Considering he trespassed, why wouldn't he?

One of his GOP primary opponents deserves to be in congress much more. Nuff said.

Expected result (i count only 4 Democrats in comparable and redder districts, and all of them (Barrow, McIntyre, Matheson and Rahall) are more conservative then ECB), but unexpected margin..  In some aspects - last year MA-06 election in reverse: as much baggage as Tierney had couldn't sink him.. The same with Sanford. Party affiliation now beats "morale" convincingly. I even think a convicted killer with "proper" letter after his name could be easily elected in a number of districts NOW.

Well, a district in Florida did elect convicted war criminal Allen West in 2010.

It's useless. It would anger Democrats' base while having no effect on voters, since they will demonize candidates linking them to Obama.

If anything, we should take a model of that. Tie all Republicans candidates, expecially in liberal states to controversial Republicans.

Yeah, I see how that could work, I just hate how it moves things in the direction of purism. I guess nationalization of races is here to stay though, for better or worse.

Karen Tumulty ‏@ktumulty 33m
Interviewed about a dozen voters at @ColbertBuschSC home polling place in Mt Pleasant. All but one had voted for @MarkSanford #sc

Looking through the precincts, ECB only won 4 of almost 40 precincts in Mt. Pleasant. Yikes.

Isn't Mount Pleasant basically just a big exurban blob?

Yeah, I agree. Clinton did that when he ran against Dole. He tied him to Newt Gingrich, who was waaay past his prime by 1996. All of Clinton's attack ads mentioned Dole/Gingrich. Although it wasn't a hard connection to make as Dole and Gingrich were both the leaders of their respective chambers.

Sanford reached a settlement with Jenny, so no court appearance but he has to pony up 5k.

Is that surprising? We also elected Vern Buchanan, Alcee Hastings, and Rick Scott.

Mt. Pleasant is a really wealthy town. I suppose it could be an exurb, but it has a pretty solid identity in its own right. No shock ECB got demolished there.

You may not like her, but Lois Frankel hasn't (maybe) perpetuated the largest Medicare fraud in history, been impeached, or shot at someone (unless you know something I don't?)

This special election in SC-1 has conveniently provided Democrats with another target.  I'm sure Mark Sanford will do wonders for his party's already suffering image.

Sean Trende has a neat write-up on what Sanford's win means.

I thought this was interesting:

If this week's special election had high turnout, it would have been over for Sanford. Turnout was less than half of what it was in the 2012 regular election.

Calling Brown unobjectionable isn't quite accurate. He was always considered a weak incumbent.

But if he wants to argue that the results show that a district that has swung in the past (like MS-1 and old LA-6 once did) showed Republicans still holding their own, he's got a point. It's not 2006 for certain.

I can't help people who don't even bother to vote. By the time I turned 18, my rights had been violated enough that I appreciated the right to vote, and couldn't wait to march into the booth and pull the big lever. It's a shame that millions of Americans don't have the same appreciation for the very activity that makes a democratic republic work.
