I was assuming it was somewhere in between, like a heavily religious-flavored socialism that isn't actually theocratic and would ideally involve various religious and secular groups working in concert, on vaguely religious and distinctly socialist premises. Of course, I'm biased, because that's something of a personal pipe dream of mine.

But I disagree that attempts to spread ideology through religion have not met with success.  Abolition of slavery in the British Empire, prohibition of alcohol in the United States, and the propagation of pan-arab nationalism via oil-financed wahhabism are all examples of ideological propagation in which religion was, at least to some degree, the vector of choice.

That's three examples. If you consider how most ideologies spread through societies, that makes up a very small amount case studies. If you consider attempts to spread ideology through religion, the track record is also not very successful(colonization). I'll add another example to your three, televangelism in US.
