that is an effective election strategy.  however, history will not remember them kindly.  60 years from now i dont want to explain to my grandchildren why im still a republican even though they were so intolerant to a segment of the population.

and democrats are only slightly better.  they just  sound more tolerant.  very few dems are willing to  grant homosexuals rights that other americans enjoy.

WalterMitty, you are thinking just as I was before I switched parties.  There are so many ways in which the religious party is the enemy of individual liberty, but the issue of hating and oppressing gays was for me the straw that broke the camel's back.  To compromise with such a bunch of religious intolerants for the sake of a few points lower top tax rate suddenly seemed to me embarrassingly stupid!

I don't think it's so down pat and simple. But I do think that the way homosexuals force people, not only oh-so sophisticated Manhattanites, but also little baptist grannies in Georgia, to not only recognize, but congratulate and cheerlead homosexuality, is severly alienating to Republicans in general.

That said, I congratulate the 30% of gay people who aren't on the left-wing reservation. Republican, libertarian, unaffiliated, whatever, I salute them.

Homosexuals tend to have higher incomes, therefore they *should* be voting Republican. But, gays vote on social issues -- where Democrats are light years ahead of Republicans.

Yeah, I agree with you. So do most Americans, the problem is that the far-religious right will not shut up long enough for them mainstream to tell the homosexual comminity to tone it down or else. The religious right's automatic and immeadiate condemning leads people to be wary of them more than those they accuse.

The Republican party is hostile to the radical gay political agenda, not gays per se.

Just as the party opposes the radical feminist agenda, and this does not mean that it is hostile to women.

We need to stop allowing the most radical and self-serving fringe of interest groups define the whole group.

Surely, there are some Republicans (as well as some Democrats) who are hostile to homosexual behavior.  That is their right, like it or not.  But defense of traditional values is not necessarily hostility to gays, just as defense of traditional marriage is not hostility to women.
