Has there been any municipality, or preferably, precinct-level data released by the NJ Division of Elections for the 2012 presidential elections? I have combed their website, and I have been unable to find anything. It's almost March, and this hasn't been released yet?

I definitely saw the data back in December or so. Not sure where. I'll see if I can dig it up.

Clear move to Obama in all the white lower-middle class/Italian towns in that area. Lyndhurst, North Arlington, Nutley, Carlstadt, Hasbrouck Heights, etc. all went McCain -> Obama.

Dis those whites that you mention voted for Obama or was it hispanics there?

Not that many Hispanics in any of those towns. Some, but not that many (10-18%, depending on the town). I mean, I'm sure they made the difference between voting for Obama or Romney in some places since the margins were very small, but Hispanics are not a major political force in that area. Yet, anyway.

Nutley is definitely a notch or two richer than "lower middle-class".  Heck, that whole area is probably just straight-up middle class by the standards of the country at large, and Nutley is definitely the wealthiest of all those towns.

I do wonder to what extent the Hispanic percentage there has increased in the past several years; they have historically been very white but that may be changing.

Well, it's a class issue more than an income issue, but you get the point. Hasbrouck Heights is also pretty wealthy. Regardless, the area is clearly different in kind from other heavily white areas like northern Bergen/Passaic or far western Essex (which, among other things, are more monolithic in their wealth).

Also, while increases in the Hispanic population could explain things, all of these towns trended Republican in 2008. Some, like North Arlington, even swung towards McCain. It seems unlikely that the Hispanic population controlled trends in 2012 but not in 2008.

So the blue collar Italians in those towns favored Obama?

Camden was 96.8% for Obama.  It's a hellish piece of urban decay, but still... wow.

Manville went for Obama too after going for McCain 2008...for some reason the white-working class towns in the northeast swung Democratic. Look at Scranton, Staten Island, parts of Philly and Providence.

Obama hit 98.5% in East Orange! Romney was outvoted there 75-1.

Im guessing it was three things:

1) Hurricane Sandy: That swung a lot of NJ and NY to Obama

2) White Democrats coming home: Obama was an incumbent so the racial issues were less salient this time

3) Class: Obama ran a more populist campaign in 2012 and Romney ran a more upper-crust campaign. While parts of NE Essex and SW Bergen swung to Obama, Madison and Morris Plains went from Obama to Romney, and Obama dropped from a double-digit percentage win in Summit to a razor-thin win.

Thoughts?

basically Romney lost the whole Rt 1 corridor(Woodbridge(mall area) to Trenton), whole Rt 1&9(Fairview by GWB Bridge) to Woodbridge(Mall area)(Middlesex County) corridor, entire(ok mostly) Palisades Parkway and 9W corridor(Fort Lee by GWB Bridge up to NY State Line), mostly entire I-295 corridor(Trenton down to Delaware Memorial Bridge, and Garden State Parkway(Exit 166 in Hillsdale to Exit 117 in Matawan.)

East Orange was 65% Republican in 1948, in sharp contrast. But then again, it was 90% white back then.

Could have left off that Romney lost Rt 1&9, Rt 1, and I-295 corridor and just said NJ Turnpike Corridor. What did Romney win 5 towns in the NJ Turnpike Corridor?
