The fact that Avatar got nominated for Best Picture is mind boggling.

I don't think Avatar is that great, but there are plenty of Oscar nominees that are worse, It's just easy to pick on Avatar because it made so much money.

And because it's sh**t.

At least it has a fresh RT score, unlike for example The Reader.

Slumdog Millionaire: I really failed to see the big deal around it
Avatar: didn't see it but most people I know who saw it found it sh**tty
Titanic: mildly amusing, but largely a sappy overblown cheap rom-com in a historical setting. The 1953 movie is way better
Tree of Life: might be the worst movie ever I've ever seen
A Serious Man: yeah Antonio reminded me of how I couldn't stand it for over 10 minutes

Nobody likes Twilight except for Twihards, so it doesn't count

This year, The Master and Beasts of the Southern Wild are both pretty terrible. Didn't last long into them.

No one's mentioned Michael Clayton yet, but that BP nominee was torture to sit through.

I didn't mind it.  Syriana was worse George Clooney Oscarbait.

I liked both of them, particularly Syriana...

Of course it's been years since I've seen either of them so who knows.

This kind of thing mostly comes down to personal taste, yes?

I'll also nominate anything directed by Spielberg.

Spielberg has the trend to spoil his movies with sugarcoated finals that lead to hyperglycemia. However, the Schindler's List is a great movie.

Is Hashemite seriously saying that The Tree of Life is worse than Twilight?

Given the fact how much hatred Avatar receives (about 90% of all comments I read about it on the Internet since 2009 are negative), I'm inclined to say that it is actually an underrated movie.

(Granted, it's not really "Best Picture" material either. Tongue )

The cinematography was good. Eliminate every other aspect of the film.

It's debatable. I hate both movies, but I understood more than a third of the Twilight series and in all its horror and stupidity, it was pretty funny (because it was so bad). Tree of Life was a giant WTF for me.

I love the Tree of Life, but it obviously isn't everyone's cup of camomile, so wouldn't judge someone for disliking it. I would judge someone for hating (say) Caché though.

This one?

I'm not familiar with it. Guess I'll have to add it to my queue.

I've only seen part of "Braveheart", but was not a huge fan of it by any stretch. Maybe if I'd paid more attention, but in any case, I didn't. As well, when looking into wikipedia, I found that there were some utterly unforgivable historical errors.

Braveheart's historical consultant (a very prominent Scottish historian) resigned in disgust after about three days.

Braveheart isn't a bad movie. Historically though it's a pile of crap and at times insulting.

Really dude, name one person on here who has said that the Republicans didn't promote Civil Rights in the Reconstruction Era and that the chief opposition to the CRA of 1964 were the large amounts of white Southern Republicans.  Also, name one person who said that Woodrow Wilson was a Civil Rights hero and that Calvin Coolidge was the President who locked up all the Japanese looking people.

Those are what I would consider "unforgivable historial errors", but I guess such views are subjective. . . . . .
