I would love to try it!  I wish it were more available:

Don't say nay to horsemeat - French eaters

* Loyal minority defends horse as a tasty low-fat meat

* Fans of horsemeat eat it raw, rare or smoked in sausage

* Butchers closing one by one as appetite for horse dwindles

Lol.

I'll put down $5 that Al makes some kind of sarcastic remark in this thread.

Seems like it would be incredibly lean and not very tasty.

It's quite tasty. And not that unlike beef, to be frank.

You know what? I do too, actually. I found myself wondering if it was possible to do so.

I've had horse meat a couple of times, it's quite good in a meat fondue.

I never had horsemeat myself and I think you cannot get it here because it's not common (but I don't know really, because I'm not the restaurant-eating-guy).

In Austria, the most common meats used are cow, chicken, pig and deer.

But I don't know what the big deal is about horse meat.

Definitely never seen horse on a restaurant menu.

It is usually considered taboo in large parts of Europe in the same way that cats and gods are. There is also an ancient association with poverty (as horses are usually only slaughtered when they become too old to work... people don't buy meat from the knacker if they can afford to buy elsewhere.) And of course, it's a major news item in Britain atm.

I guess they would be fattened for a while before being slaughtered..

Definitely never seen horse on a restaurant menu.

I remember when I visited Malta a couple of years ago, there were many restaurants advertising horse meat in huge posters on the street right outside the restaurant itself.

I should have tried it just so I could say that I ate another strange (at least for me) meat apart from ostrich and crocodile that I had in South Africa many years ago Tongue

Although since I ate in Mcdonalds yesterday, there's a good chance I have already inadvertently tasted it Grin

It is true I'm not a big fan of the browsing animals.  Other than for eating of course.  I'm not fond of them for petting or anthropomorphizing.

I can't remember ever eating it.  I've never ridden a horse either, come to think of it.  I'd probably ride or eat one, if it became necessary, although I can't see going out of my way to do either.

In my experience, mammals that are herbivores are usually pretty tasty, but carnivorous mammals are not.  It's not that way with fish and reptiles and birds.  I'm not sure why.  Anyway, horses are vegetarians so I'd expect their flesh to taste, more or less, similar to alpaca, deer, and the like.  Texturally it'd be different, but I like jerked meats and I like octopus and conch and even crunchy meats, so the "stringy" or "tough" part doesn't bother me.  Neither does flatulence.

I can't imagine flatulence coming from eating meat - in my case the rare occasions I used to get it came from eating vegetables or beans or other canned or processed foods.  Oddly I almost never get it in Thailand.

Horse meat - I can't eat it.

Not that I would want to, and nor should you.  Don't ban it, though.  That's a bit nanny state-ish.

I've never ridden a horse either, come to think of it.

We had them growing up - or maybe they were ponies.  I'm not so clear on the distinction, and I was a kid at the time.  Maybe they were small horses?  Anyway, we only rode them a few times and then they lived out the rest of their lives  unmolested in a paddock(?) - who wants to ride around in the outdoors?  Typically the outdoors is not nice in Missouri - hot and full of mosquitoes.  Come to think of it, how did those poor little bastards survive ten years in that paddock with all the mosquitoes?

Never had any dog.  I've had omnivorous primate and rodent, and carnivorous feline.  As for herbivores, I recall having sampled antelope, alpaca, llama, cuy, cow, pig, goat, lamb, sheep, rabbit, deer, elk, buffalo, and guinea pig.  Controling for "gameyness" and "stringyness" so to speak, and allowing myself to judge the meat on the palette of amino acids and adipose tissue that make up the bulk of the flesh, I judge herbivores to be more delicious.  I suspect that I'm not alone.  We often encounter the various ungulates and primarily herbivorous rodents on menus, but we rarely encounter feline, canine, or ursine mammals.  Even dolphin-free tuna is required (although that may have more to do with political correctness than with the fact that dolphins prefer fish to seaweed).

It may all be coincidental, but I suspect it isn't.  At least I know that if I were ever in a situation such as that depicted on the movie "Alive" I'd be sure to find out who is and who isn't a vegetarian before folks start dying off.  I wouldn't want to go cannibal, but in a pinch, I'll eat the herbivores first.

Anyway, horse falls under the okay to eat category in my book.  I'm not going out of my way to eat it, but if it comes down to horse or polar bear, I'll take the horse.

There are a lot of "unique meats" that I prefer more, such as raccoon or squirrel.

Yes, of course. It's perfectly edible, and I see no reason businesses shouldn't be able to sell it if there isn't a market.

I wouldn't be averse to trying horse meat (of course, considering I regularly eat the stuff that comes out of our school cafeteria, perhaps I already have). However, you should all be averse to trying kumiss. I had some in NY once; it's hard to think of any other food which screams 'acquired taste' more.
