I won't be celebrating just yet; who knows what uber-conservative replaces him.

I just heard about this.  He lasted a fair amount longer than he was "supposed" to... when they elected him, they allegedly wanted a short-termed Pope.

Chernenko, for Vatican standards.

At least Benedict was liberal on environmental issues, war and health care. Hope the next pope continues the trend.

Resigning due to old age?!  Did he not fully understand the job description?  JPII battled on right to the end after years of ill health.

It wasn't so much that he's been liberal on these or any issues as that these are some issues where Vatican-line Catholic orthodoxy is roughly similar to what could be considered left-wing in secular politics.

Anyway, this is the first time any pope has done this in centuries--the last was during the Western Schism, I think, though I could be wrong or forgetting someone--so it's going to be, to say the least, interesting to see how this is handled.

Perhaps he's had a Alzheimers/dementia diagnosis. Would the Catholic church be well served by a leader who is insentient?

Three sounds right for discussing who will be next to wear the triple crown.
