Why did Mondale run for president in 1984?

Was he challenged for the nomination? What's the point to getting slaughtered?

Very few elections start off with one candidate knowing they're going to get slaughtered (a la 1904/1956/ to a certain extent 1964 [although Goldwater never admitted this in public]).

Heck, the Democrats thought they had a good chance against Nixon in '72.

Remember also that polling and elections in general were much more volatile back then...he was only down 4 points in May, for example (not a bad showing)...and he felt that if he could win the debates, he might have a chance.

Compare 1980, where Reagan was down 16 in August...and never actually took the lead until the last poll.

There were lots of challengers in 1984, namely Gary Hart, who swept the West and nearly got the nomination.

Hah, good point.

But it's just a game, so I have no problem losing. I would hate to be slaughtered in a presidential race, heh.
