Say the "Canuck letters" were never published, and Edmund Muskie managed to win the Democratic nomination in 1972.  I'm guessing he would've won, given the economy and Nixon's Vietnam policies.  Thoughts?

Muskie didn't lose because of the Canuck letters: he lost because he was all roof and no foundation. Once the roof of media inevitability collapsed... game ovah. Assuming he does somehow win the nomination- Nixon still wins comfortably, though not the bone-crushing landslide of RL.

Ah, okay.  I didn't realize how lacking in substance he was.  I guess I should've made this HHH vs. Nixon.

In the book "Listening In" JFK predicts that if Adlai Stevenson wins the Democratic Presidential Nomination in 1960, he will pick Ed Muskie for VP.

No way Nixon loses California. Also the Southern states going Dem are questionable.

Nixon might actually feel more of a need for a Watergate style stunt against Muskie.

This.

The only way Nixon loses in '72 is if either Watergate gets more focus in the press earlier than it did or something else extremely damaging happens over the course of Nixon's first term that didn't in real life.

Snowstalker's map is just about right, though I could see Muskie also possibly picking up WI or IA. Still a huge Nixon win.

Nixon -- 56%, 463 EVs from 41 states
Muskie -- 43%, 75 EVs from 9 states and DC
