In the hypothetical, let's say Lieberman wins the Democratic nomination and chooses a moderate to conservative Vice President. Meanwhile, Chafee attempts to unseat Bush, gets trounced, and combines with Howard Dean to form an anti-war independent ticket.

President George W. Bush (R-TX)/Vice President Richard B. Cheney (R-WY)

vs.

Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-CT)/Senator Bob Graham (D-FL)

vs.

Senator Lincoln Chafee (I-RI)/Former Governor Howard Dean (I-VT)

I think Chafee gets a decent amount of frustrated Dem (and some Rep) support, but because he just isn't that inspiring of a candidate, he doesn't do too well, Lieberman doesn't get enough cross-over GOP support and Bush crushes them both. Lieberman wins Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, and D.C.. Chafee wins Rhode Island and Vermont. Bush wins everywhere else.

President George W. Bush: 48.5%
Senator Joe Lieberman: 32.6%
Senator Lincoln Chafee: 12.8%

Bush/Cheney  47%               367

Lieberman/Graham  43%      168
Chafee/Dean  9%                     3
others  1%

The independent ticket comes in 1st place in VT, and a strong 2nd place in RI.
