I don't buy that. It's pretty clear this girl isn't who Teo said she was. He admitted it. The picture was fake. Not sure what this guy is saying. My assumption is he and his friend hatched the idea to push him into the spotlight and get all this recognition. He may or may not be gay.

Based on recent "evidence," I'm siding more with Manti being incredibly naive and falling for a hoax but there are still a lot of unanswered questions:

- The supposed "meetings" at Stanford and Hawaii
- The source stated they were "80%" sure he was involved
- The apparent connections between Te'o and the accused

Also, wouldn't this guy try to get this girl on Skype or something? What gives? I guess I just don't have much respect for relationships that are conducted without any physical interaction.

With a fake girlfriend you don't have to worry about being either dumped or blackmailed.  The former would be embarrassing (but not as much as this) while the latter is an unfortunate possibility.  Heck, the blackmail meme isn't just about future pro athlete.  See An Officer and a Gentleman  (but only if you aren't from Oklahoma).

What's strange to me about this is this guy is a star collegiate athlete with national exposure and he has an online girlfriend from across the country who keeps busting the meetings they set up? I mean, even if he wanted a pen-pal platonic type girlfriend, he could have found that at Notre Dame. He's either really naive or in on it. It could have started out as a joke and then took on a life of its own. To me, that's the most likely explanation, and now he's saying he was hoaxed to save face. But we'll see.
