It seems she has pretty much sided with Democrats on most issues during her time in the senate so far. This makes her different from other southern Democrat senators like Landrieu and Manchin who pretty much have to oppose their party at least half the time to win over conservative votes. Still, NC is one of the most liberal southern states, although it does lean to the right.

In 2014, a midterm year, can Kay Hagan win as an Obama Dem or will she have to tack to the right in the next two years?

My guess is she's fine due to the lack of any competitive GOP opponent, so long as she doesn't do anything too egregious.

Seems like Tillis is the frontrunner to face Hagan, and that he'd lose without a wave, in which case NC is red enough to push him through. As an unpopular state legislatorial leader, Tillis reads like a stereotypical beaten-by-Tea-Party fellow, though I may be misjudging him and we'll see how this goes in general.

NC is certainly Democratic/liberal enough that Hagan won't be in the same situation as Landrieu/Pryor/Manchin, and would need the right GOP challenger to be vulnerable. She may luck out as all 9 GOP House members are either freshmen (Hudson, Pittenger, Meadows, Holding), underperformers (Ellmers, Foxx, McHenry), wouldn't excite the base (Jones), or are too old (Coble). The state legislature is solidly Republican but only because of gerrymandering and is/will be unpopular so Tillis (or another State legislator) may be a liability.

The one guy who could actually beat Kay Hagan is currently in the Governors seat.

Hagan's reasonably safe. A decent analogue might be Virginia in 2012.

I believe North Carolina has found two Senates that match both sides of the state. Burr with consvertives and Kay with liberals. I think both of them will be able to hold their seats as long as they want them.
