Is this a safe Republican seat? If so, are there any other potential GOP candidates? If it's competitive, who are the likely Democratic contenders?

This is a completely safe Republican district. It's 60% McCain and 66% Romney.

Kinder is considered the frontrunner for the nomination, but former State Treasurer Sarah Steelman, who came in 3rd place in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate last year, has also announced a run.

I live in this district, and it could be competitive given the right candidate. Look at the number of counties here that McCaskill and Nixon carried in their respective elections.

As for the GOP, it will be Kinder or any Republican from the crony Cape Girardeau Republican establishment. That's where the money is in the district and inevitably that's where the next congress critter will crawl to Congress from.
