Over the last four years, President Samuel J. Tilden has, for the most part, steered a moderate but decidedly Democratic course. Despite calls by Greenbacks and silverites to enact inflationary policies, Tilden has preserved the gold standard. He made headlines in 1878 when he replaced Collector of the Port of New York Chester Alan Arthur--A Republican Stalwart who worked for the Conkling machine, a rival of Tilden in New York politics--with a man who was unbeholden to any of the state machines. In his 1879 state of the union address, Tilden made the political mistake of calling for lowering tariffs by a substantial margin. Upsetting Republicans, the majority of the rest of his term has been in stalemate. Who will you vote for? Tilden, gold, lower tariffs, and reform? Blaine, tariffs, and the Half-Breeds? Or Weaver and paper money?

President Samuel J. Tilden (D-NY)/Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court Joel Parker (D-NJ)

Senator James G. Blaine (R-ME)/Former Collector of the Port of New York Chester Alan Arthur (R-NY)

Congressman James B. Weaver (G-IA)/Former Congressman Benjamin F. Butler (G-MA)

Weaver, btw why was Hendricks dropped from the Democratic ticket (in terms of regional balance he makes more sense than Parker)?

No idea, but a couple of folks requester Parker.

And yes, Supersonic, I too feel sorry for Blaine. Tongue

Why did this Forum suddenly switch from being super Republican to being Democratic-leaning?

Why did this Forum suddenly switch from being super Republican to being Democratic-leaning?

I think it's because of the fact that the Civil War & reconstitution aren't really issues anymore, so the conservatives & libertarians are now voting based on economic issues.

Bryan was too much of a social reactionary for me. I plan to vote for whoever the Socialist person is in those elections.

Debs didn't run in 96. Apparently it was this guy:

Still better than McKinley or Bryan.

It really is a shame. The man who beat the political machines, has kept this nation at peace, and has seen the continuation of prosperity and the gold standard, thrown out of office by the rabbles.

I am quite looking forward to President Debs's four-term administration. Just saying that is like a political orgasm.
