I am struck by how 2000 2004 2008 and 2012 are all fairly similar.  This seems rare.  Only other cluster of elections that are this close I can think of are 1880 1884 and 1888 elections.

That's why I've said that 2000 was a realigning election (even though I understand why someone with a different definition of "realigning would disagree).  It seems that even if one of the two parties runs satan, they will still get more than 20 states.

Except when Kerry won 19 states in 2004 despite losing by only a moderate margin.
