I doubt most Americans are even AWARE of Christkind, except in the Cajun part of Louisiana.

This could've used more options… I thought everyone knew that on Christmas Eve, the ghost of Nikola Tesla rides a chariot pulled by magical flying walruses around the world -- not all in one leg, of course; there is gratuitous time travel involved -- delivering presents to all the good little children and packages of frozen broccoli to all the not-so-good little children.

What is Christkind, other than the German name for "Christ child"?  Isn't it obvious?  "Santa Claus" or "the Christkind" (i.e. the parents) do it.

An angel-type figure promoted as the primary Christmas gift giver instead of Santa in much of Central Europe. Ironically almost all are Catholic countries even though this was initially promoted by Martin Lutheran to downplay St. Nicholas. Pretty much unheard of in America except for amongst Cajuns. I think Quebec used to a lot of Christkind promoters too but eventually gave into Santa.

The Christkind are an alien species that bear a striking resemblance to a small Jewish child who turned out to be the messiah.  They come and leave presents under the trees of people in Germany and Austria because, you know, they are the master race and the Christkind like such things.

Their mortal enemy, Santa Claus, brings presents to everybody else (except Jews).  Santa Claus and the Christkind fight on Boxing Day and it's almost always a draw.

Also Phil's attitude is a little odd because I understand that Italy is also a Christkind country.

Santa.  He brings gifts which his elves have made.  Anyone who says differently is a filthy liar.

Wut? No.

However, we do have La Befana which is uniquely Italian, and is active on Epiphany. Tongue

...what's my attitude in the previous post? I was joking with Tender. You know, because he's obsessed with Austria.

Also, as Antonio pointed out, Italy is not a Christkind country; it has La Befana on the Epiphany and Babbo Natale (Santa) on Christmas (though I don't get the point of that since gift giving in Italy is on the Epiphany). Insert foot in your big, dumb mouth. There! There's my attitude! Merry Christmas. Buon Natale.

I had a friend once who would get piss drunk. He'd even start to cry sometimes. He assured me wasn't an alcoholic; he just liked beer.

That's hardly comparable: A fondness for Austria on an internet forum is not really dangerous, but many beers can be.

...that's...true but a) irrelevant and b) doesn't make it less of an obsession.

The question would be when the "obsession" starts and if it's not just a "solid interest" in the topic. I hardly post more than 5 replies about AUT each day, sometimes even none at all. I would not consider that obsessive. Because this Forum is about the US anyway mostly, stuff about other countries is needed for comparison purposes.
