He was fourth-longest serving member of Congress in history (behing Robert Byrd, John Dingell and Carl Hayden) and the second-longest serving Senator.

A number of Senators have convened on the Senate floor, likely discussing the loss of Senator Inouye.

Shocking news. Particularly given it was only a few hours ago that he was hospitalised Sad

I wonder what this means for the Senate.

And so the door closes on the Greatest Generation's time in public service.

Now all we have are the Vietnamers and the Baby Boom mooches who never served and haven't done anything for their country but demand to be taxed less.

Ralph Hall must be the last WWII veteran in Congress.

I remember that so many Hawaii politicians specifically wanted either Hawaii senator to retire years ago, so that they would not retire/die so close to each other. But that is exactly what ended up happening. So now both Hawaii senators will have very low seniority.

He was a good person and I agree with most of his votes and all, but I very much do not like the idea of serving in the Senate until death. People deserve representation from somebody who is capable of carrying out his duties.  Just as true for Inouye as for Strom Thurmond.

A great public servant and one who realised compromise is a more constructive path than self-interest and obstruction.
