Can we merge the two DeMint threads? It's confusing.

I've never seen anyone resign high ranking public office to become a lobbyist.

Are you joking dude?

If not then I have a name for you: Trent Lott.

Trent Lott left under scandal.  I guess I should have added "popular high ranking public official"

What a pleasant surprise. He makes my skin crawl more than any other Senator.

I don't remember any scandal. He resigned to avoid the tougher rules that started to apply in 2008 to ex members of congress who wanted to become lobbyists.

Yeah he only resigned from his leadership position after his racist scandal. He resigned from the Senate years later.

Funny but unlikely possibility: DeMint primaries Graham for his seat in four years.

Graham is up in 2 years Smiley

A friend mentioned that to me earlier today. It would be amusing.

Here's how it could happen: Graham resigns from the Senate, just to be immediately appointed by Haley to DeMint's seat. Furious of this decision, DeMint pledges to unseat Graham in 2016. Grin

Tim Scott! I don't particularly like him ideologically, but it's symbolically significant to have someone who looks like the lead in Drama Club's play be a Republican U.S. Senator from South Carolina...if you know what I mean. Which of course you all do.

If a Congressman gets appointed to the seat, there's a shot for the Democrats to win the House seat, given how weird special election turnout can be. Especially true for Mulvaney's district, where the Democratic candidate got (IIRC) 45% in November.

Scott's district was 58/40 Romney. 'Tough sledding for a Democrat.

A sad, sad, sad day for Democrats nationwide.

Actually it is a very bad day for Democrats. Just wait till you hear of RNC Chair Rev. JC Watts. DeMint was in advertising (and quite successful prior to his time in politics). It will be Tea Party promotions all around in SC on this one.

I'm actually perplexed by this. I think his best place to be Iinfluential is the Senate. If God (yes the Christian one) led him to this, moderates don't stand a chance of winning the nod in the GOP primary. Awesome thing is we have a deep GOP bench for 2016.

Miles.... DeMint didnt start the recession. It was guys like him and Pence who fought for conservative principals that went against the GOP establishment.

Mike voted to increase the debt ceiling, though.

So this basically proves that Jim DeMint is in fact a bigger joke than Alvin Greene.

So, I wonder if this ties into the fiscal cliff negotiations in any way? Perhaps DeMint is so frustrated that he's just throwing in the towel?

So this basically proves that Jim DeMint is in fact a bigger joke than Alvin Greene.

He's a bad man.

Good riddance to one of the worst members of the US Senate.

The only good thing about him is that he apparently has not enriched himself while in the Senate.
