Oh wow...

Is he resigning immediately? Will Haley appoint a replacement until the special election?

He's leaving in January; Haley appoints someone until a 2014 Special

Potential replacements:
Tim Scott
Joe Wilson
Andre Bauer

Who else? Alvin Greene should get the seat, but it's doubtful, unfortunately.

This is South Carolina - I'm just thinking of names. Henry McMaster is another one.

Good news for Lindsay Graham, as it will presumably draw away some of his primary challengers.

As krazen said, Scott is most likely.

DKE pointed a fun fact: Of the last 9 Governors who have appointed themselves to the Senate, only 1 has actually won the subsequent election, Happy Chandler in KY. 'Doesn't bode well for Haley appointing herself.

Well that was unexpected. Is there any Dem in the wings that could potentially get elected to the now-open seat?

If Mulvaney is appointed, Vince Shaheen could make the open House seat competitive.

Sheheen is widely expected to go after Haley in a rematch.  While he might be able to take the 5th in a special election, he'd have a tough time holding it and he'd have to give up any thought of statewide office in 2014.

However the fact that the 5th would be potentially vulnerable means I doubt Mulvaney would be appointed unless he lets Haley know that regardless of whether he is appointed or not, he'll be running for the seat in 2014.

Entirely possible, but far from the only contender.

Good news for Lindsay Graham, as it will presumably draw away some of his primary challengers.

Actually, this is bad news for Graham. DeMint had already indicated he wouldn't be running in 2016, so some of Graham's potential primary competition could have been considering running for the open seat in 2016 instead.  That's no longer an option. So it now depends on who Haley puts in DeMint's seat.  If she appoints a placeholder such as former AG Henry McMaster which the article on The State newspaper's website mentions as one possibility, then it won't hurt Graham.  But if she appoints someone like Rep. Tim Scott or Rep. Trey Gowdy who would be expected to run in 2014, then it'll make things worse for Graham, as any Republican who wants a Senate seat will need to go through Graham to get it.

I've never seen anyone resign high ranking public office to become a lobbyist.

Definitely not Bauer, not after what happened in the 2010 gubernatorial.

Happy day for Lindsey Graham - let the circular firing squad start without him.

No, it's a sad day for Lindsay.  DeMint had already signaled he wasn't running in 2016.  If Haley appoints someone who would be expected to hold onto the seat, then those who would have preferred to wait until the open seat in 2016 are going to have to instead challenge him in 2014.

Isn't Tom Davis the one supposed to be challenging Graham? Plus if Scott's appointed there will have to be a special for his House seat.

Senator Vic Rawl, maybe?

Also, would the special election be held next year or in November 2014?

Thanks for reelecting me just two years ago, now I'm quitting.

I've never seen anyone resign high ranking public office to become a lobbyist.

Are you joking dude?

If not then I have a name for you: Trent Lott.

Yes, but Lott was already a yesterday news when he quit. DeMint certainly was not.
