He's becoming President of the Heritage Foundation, breaking on Politico.

How will he be replaced?  Special election or appointment?

Wow, that actually is really surprising. It'll also mean that two seats are up in SC in 2014 then.

Well that was unexpected. Is there any Dem in the wings that could potentially get elected to the now-open seat?

My understanding is that the Dems have a very weak bench in SC (as well as Georgia).  Remember, they sent Alvin Greene to run for Senator because he was first alphabetically.

I guess the only question is which one of the 4 tea party freshman gets the seat.

Thank merciful God.  I mean, the replacement might end up being just as conservative, but still, thanks for making my day a little better.

Happy day for Lindsey Graham - let the circular firing squad start without him.

If Mulvaney is appointed, Vince Shaheen could make the open House seat competitive.

Wow. I wonder if this implies something is happening in the fiscal cliff negotiations...

Or a combination of "ka-ching" and the prospects for filibuster reform taking away the fun of his job...

DeMint deserves the Heritage Foundation job, and the Heritage Foundation job deserves DeMint. Congratulations all around.

He says his constituents will understand that being a senator was never going to be his career - but could he at least finish the term they elected him to? It's painfully obvious that being head of the Heritage Foundation pays more and he doesn't really care about his constituents.

Hear hear.

Also, apparently Ryan was offered this first but he declined. No secret as to why.

That's all good but I wonder if Haley and her electorate can find somebody even more disturbed.
