Winning an election without winning a county (or precinct)?

(1/1)

Bleeding heart conservative, HTMLdon:
In a 3 (or more) way race, its theoretically possible for a candidate to win the election without winning a sub-jurisdiction like a county or precinct - by coming in 2nd everywhere while the other candidates split 1st and 3rd places in different jurisdictions.

Does anyone have any examples of this happening in real life?

Hash:
I can think of the 1979 Canadian election, when the Liberals won the NWT with 34% against 32% each for the PCs and NDP, but they didn't win any of the two seats in the territory.

RBH:
Russ Carnahan won the MO-3 primary in 2004 while finishing 2nd in all 4 counties.
