actually guys who have some speed tend to age better than those who don't.  more generally players with diversified skill sets have a better chance of remaining productive into their mid-30s.  Reyes fits this bill very well, as he does many things with some proficiency (some power, he developed decent on-base ability, average or so defensively) and excels in baserunning and contact-hitting.  his injury history is concerning, but 6/100M for a very good, homegrown, 28-year old player at a premium position should be a no-brainer for a team in the largest market in the country.

also there is some indication that Reyes would have taken as low as 5/85-90 from the Mets.

The thing is I think you pay many of these guys for what he used to do. A 65 steals type player.  When he will likely now be a 15HR 35 SB type guy.  Further, Reyes will be getting paid 20 million when he is 35 and in a non steriod age I can't see how in the world that would be a value.

Raw power tends to erode quickly, but the one skill that lasts longest is plate discipline, and power hitters who have that last longest.

the decrease in steals does not matter all that much.  as for the contract structure, think of it as deferred money.

Thankfully, the Cowboys are going to win this game.
