You pick the VP.

Condition: The Rielle Hunter Affair is exposed at the same time as in real life (i.e. early August). Does Edwards manage to recover and if not, how badly is his campaign damaged?

In all honesty, I think Edwards would drop out of the race, and Democrats would nominate a new candidate at the convention. Should Edwards continue, many Democrats would disown him, and you'd see Romney winning with over 400 EV's.

I think this is the case. But the real question is when he drops out, can any candidate still win this race for the Dems, even Obama?

Edwards drops out, Democrats nominate new candidate and Romney goes onto win with 300+ EV and ~53% PV.

I don't know.  I saw a poll in 2007 that had Edwards beating Romney 64% to 27%.  Granted, it's before the Rielle Hunter scandal, but still...

If the affair didn't break?

As much as I hate to say it since I supported Edwards in 2004...  he couldn't even catch on in the democratic primary.  Didn't even win a state since 2004.  He would have faired even worse in the general election.

Didn't he win the Carolinas in 04? He was the only guy who won more than one primary other than Kerry.

But seriously:

The Democratic base isn't going to vote for Romney.

No way Indiana going for Edwards before Ohio or Michigan.
