Jim Matheson Campaign Website: Budget Plan
Congressman Matheson is committed to fiscal discipline.  He believes that, like American families do each day, the federal government must be responsible - living within its means and balancing its budget.  It is fiscally reckless and morally wrong to pile debt on future generations.  The time is now to act.  Our nation’s current fiscal path is unsustainable and the consequences are grave: slower economic growth, higher interest payments on the debt, less flexibility to address important needs or future emergencies.  The plan to address this challenge must be ambitious, pro-growth and address all areas of the budget.

As a leader in the conservative Blue Dog coalition—a group of Democrats committed to ensuring the financial stability and national security of the U.S., Matheson has supported efforts to promote accountability by government agencies, the implementation of pay-as-you-go budget enforcement rules that prevent deficit spending, a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution and the elimination of duplicative or wasteful programs and spending.

From his first year in Congress, Congressman Matheson has led the fight on the House floor for an open, up-or-down vote on the automatic pay raise accorded Members. The secrecy of an automatic salary increase is wrong and prevents a debate on whether Congress deserves a pay raise.  Matheson has also introduced legislation to require a vote in the House of Representatives before any increase to Members’ salaries.

Statement from Mayor Bloomberg's Office in New York City
In the past few months, I have been urged by many individuals, Republicans, Independents, and Democrats alike, to consider running for the Presidency in 2008. I love my job as Mayor of New York City, but at the same time, I have become dismayed by how partisanship and silly rhetoric have deteriorated our nation. I am dismayed on President Bush's failed handling of the Iraq war, and I am dismayed by our nation's economic outlook. We need politicians who understand that one side, one ideology, does not have all the answers. We need more moderation and bi-partisanship in Washington D.C. We simply cannot afford four more years of this.

With all that being said, I will be announcing my official decision on whether or not to run for President in the coming days. Please stay tuned!

OOC: I am out of town, but will be home this afternoon, so my four week schedule will be up.

Ron Paul statement on the "Newsletters" ad.
I have, from the first debates, to my bus tours in Iowa and New Hampshire, taken responsibility for the awful statements in the newsletters under my name. Senator Hagel has used attacks on other candidates to help lead attention away from his fake facade of being a "maverick", when he in fact voted for the PATRIOT Act, the Iraq War, and No Child Left Behind. Furthermore, he shamelessly flaunts his status as a veteran (which I am too) for political gain. Chickenhawk or not, a hawk is still a hawk, and we do not need more of the same. I look forward to debating the issues with Mr. Hagel, and not distractions.

Governor Dean's response to a question on health care in Columbus:

"Now, recently we've been attacked with claims that I was some kind of right-winger, that I cut Medicaid in Vermont. The reason this was done wasn't to deny health care to working families. The Dr. Dynasaur program already paid for everything Medicaid did before, and so Medicaid was redundant. My plan as President is a bolder plan than what any other candidate has. As president, I will implement a public option, to allow Americans to purchase health care from the government as they currently can from health insurance companies."

Mayor Michael Bloomberg holds a press conference at his office in New York City. He is surrounded by his partner, Dianna Taylor. His daughters, Georgina and Emma, are also on stage.

Good afternoon. It's good to be with you today. I'll get right to the main point of this press conference - After prayer and serious deliberation with my family and close friends, I am officially declaring myself a candidate for President of the United States as an Independent!

When this race began months ago, I wouldn't have predicted that I would be standing here to today as a candidate for President. I saw quality candidates on both sides of the aisle, candidates I thought I could support. However, as time progressed, I realize I simply couldn't, as they all are part of the problem with our political system today. In both primaries, this has been a race to the bottom, with campaigns running risky campaign maneuvers and running abrasive, negative campaigns. Our nation has had years of division and bitter partisanship - we simply cannot afford four more years of this.

I'm running in this race as an independent, both in name and in spirit. I have been a Republican in the past as well as a Democrat, and I don't think either party is serious about bringing all of America together to achieve a greater good. As President, I won't be a rubber stamp for a party or a specific ideology - I will be a rubber stamp for the American people, though, as I will always act in their best interest's. We currently have an administration that is waging a war on the American people by shoving down policies that the people just don't support! As President, I will seek to fix that. On day one of a Bloomberg Administration, we will begin to take our nation's first steps towards the winding down of the war in Iraq. We also must maintain fiscal responsibility in America - As Mayor, I turned a large deficit into a $3 billion dollar surplus.

Whether you are a Republican, Democrat, Independent, or something else, if you truly desire change and bi-partisanship in Washington, ditch the statue quo, and vote for a better tomorrow: Vote Mayor Bloomberg to become the forty-fourth President of the United States!

Campaign Plans:
For the month of December, the Bloomberg Campaign will focus primarily on building a strong organization, as well as fundraising, though the Mayor plans to primarily self-fundraise. Beginning January 1st, he will begin a 50-state tour through the United States.

When I said I was out of town earlier, I was in Vero. Strange coincidence. I have family there, and its the place where I will likely live. In this scenario, it is 100% McCain country, followed very distantly by Newt.

"The War in Iraq is nonsense. We have a constitutional democracy, which means we might not always get what we want, but it usually works out that way. Well if you elect me, I will honor your wishes and the wishes of the Iraqi people and we will be moving all of our resources out of Iraq and making our way towards out of the Middle East. This was the conservative position before, and it is the conservative position now, because I am a true conservative and that's what we need in the White House right now!

I have also introduced a budgetary plan that will stop all the unnecessary and unbelievable spending of the last couple of years. I voted against No Child Left Behind because it was anti-conservative, it did not embrace our position on Education and we need to get rid of it in order to make our Education system. I also support, like I feel on a lot of other issues, that education is something that needs to be handled at the state level.

Our nation is divided, and we need someone who can bring the nation together through compromise and principle. I have shown a willingness to compromise in my tenure as a Senator, but I've always been someone who has certain principles that I am not willing to back down. I am not an isolationist, but I believe in reasonable foreign policy based on the facts, and I am not one who will hike taxes and cut off all the government at the hip, but I also believe that taxes on everybody, especially the poor and the middle class, are too high and too much of a burden, and the government throws money away and wastes it far too often.

Join me America, and together we can beat the debt, the wars, and the division."

"We don't need a more complicated tax code! Anyone who tells you that is someone who has been a lawyer or is a lawyer who wants more in their bank account! That doesn't help anyone. What we need to do is limit and remove deductions and loopholes to make a fairer tax code for all of us. All these loopholes do is allow the ones who can afford it to make ways to get out of paying their fair share. By doing this we would be able to save billions of dollars even if we cut the top rate from 35 to 33. I don't believe that the government should be incentivizing people for certain minor actions and purchases and decentivizing certain people for others through the tax code."

There is no more sacred trust than keeping America safe and preserving the freedoms enjoyed by all our citizens. I support a strong, well-trained, well-equipped military. The honor, courage and commitment to duty routinely shown by the men and women who wear this country’s uniform is unparalleled and in return, I believe in keeping the promises made to them and protecting the benefits they have earned.

Press Conference in Des Moines:

Reporter #1: What are your thoughts in Mayor Bloomberg's entrance to the race?

Gingrich: I congratulate him for running, but considering his previous stance as a republican I think the best thing for him was to run in our race. After all, third party challenges might damage our stance in November.

Reporter #2: Any opinion about the recent General Election polls, Speaker Gingrich?

Gingrich: I think that those polls are enough to clear me of the charges of being unelectable, after all, I am polling as well or even better than my fellow republican candidates, and I'm tied with Senator Clinton, the democratic frontrunner.

Excerpts from the Speech in Detroit:

"There has been a lot of talk about the economic proposals this country needs to move forward, and I would like to explain some of the positions that appear in my Second Contract with America."

"We have to make the United States the most desirable location for new business investment through a bold series of tax cuts, including: Eliminating the capital gains tax to make American entrepreneurs more competitive against those in other countries; Dramatically reducing the corporate income tax (among highest in the world) to 12.5%; Allowing for 100% expending of new equipment to spur innovation and American manufacturing; Ending the death tax permanently."

"I propose strengthening the dollar by returning to the Reagan-era monetary policies that stopped runaway inflation and reforming the Federal Reserve to promote transparency.
I also propose to remove obstacles to job creation imposed by destructive and ineffective regulations, programs and bureaucracies."

"Finally it's time to talk about energy. I believe we should implement an American energy policy that removes obstacles to responsible energy development and creates jobs in the United States.

"Balance the budget by growing the economy, controlling spending, implementing money saving reforms, and replacing destructive policies and regulatory agencies with new approaches."
