Although Obama got decimated in coal country (barely holding onto even the super-Democratic Eliot), he actually picked up Franklin, which contains the capital city of Frankfort. Any Kentuckians have ground information on trends here?

This one is simple: It's urban and it's a state capital. (Obama overperformed in state capitals this year.)

I don't think Franklin is really urban (though maybe for Kentucky), though there may be a bit of overperformance in state capitals:

Red = swing Obama
Green = swing Romney, trend Obama
Blue = swing/trend Romney

I wonder why Obama did so well in state capitals this time. The main reason I can think of is the Republicans' attacks on state workers.

My guess is it has to do with a state capital as they have a high number of civil servants and likewise a higher rate of unionization.  Could be wrong but it might be a backlash to the GOP anti-union stances.  Off course I think the GOP anti-union stances probably helped them more than hurt on a whole, but they would have gained from this more in the suburban areas and smaller towns, while hurt in the large urban centres.
