Really? I'm not from NY but I do not get that impression. At all.
I fell into thinking that Romney was a very very good candidate for the white petit bourgeois suburbs, there's a lot out there that suggests this was not the case. Obama himself is a very good candidate among the relatively wealthy, which may have neutralized anything else. did Sandy bring enough tears to eyes or wipe out enough Guidos to explain any of this? we can't know.
