With 100% of precincts reporting, it appears that Obama has taken Richmond county, New York by a slim margin marking it the first Democratic victory there in a presidential contest since 2000.

He also won Suffolk County - did he do that last time?

Yes. The only county that flipped to Romney seems to be Chautauqua?

This is somewhat surprising. Romney is the quinessential Staten Island Republican, and would,t be expected to run behind McCain here of all places.

Demographic changes and/or Sandy effect?

Apparently the southern part of the island (the most republican part) was the worst affected by the hurricane, so there was probably a turnout disparity.

I didn't expect this. Actually, Manhattan was the only borough that didn't swing towards Obama. I'd agree that it's probably hurricane-related. NJ also swung towards the President.

Really? I'm not from NY but I do not get that impression. At all.

I fell into thinking that Romney was a very very good candidate for the white petit bourgeois suburbs, there's a lot out there that suggests this was not the case.  Obama himself is a very good candidate among the relatively wealthy, which may have neutralized anything else.  did Sandy bring enough tears to eyes or wipe out enough Guidos to explain any of this?  we can't know.

Turnout was woefully down everywhere. Even McCain's campaign managed more votes than Mittens and nearly as many as Obama's this time around.
