Polls open in two hours in Vermont.  Until the exit poll #s start coming out after 5pm Eastern, this is all we have to discuss: turnout reports, voting problems, and last minute dirty tricks.  Post any news you have on that front in this thread.

For something to talk about right now, here's the current national weather map:

And also a public service message:

On election night, the traffic will likely be very high.  We'll have an omnibus presidential election results thread, and my suggestion is that if you want to keep your sanity, you set your profile settings so that you don't have to deal with the "x new replies have been posted, you might want to review your post" message when posting in a thread where other people have posted ahead of you.  To do so, just do the following:

profile -> look and layout preferences -> Don't warn on new replies made while posting.

You don't have to do this if you don't want to, but I bet it would save you some frustration!

Horrendously terrible?

Is it actually going to be awful somewhere or have improvements been made anywhere so people don't have to wait 6 hours to vote?

I always wonder why it is so difficult in the US to set up enough precincts, so that there are only 500-1000 voters per precinct, like it is the case here ?

What would certain parts of the US do if 85-90% of the VAP turn out, instead of the 56-58% that is expected today ?

Polls are open in several eastern states now.  Also, here's a roundup of stories on voting irregularities up through last night:

Hearing about 11 hour lines in past elections have just dumbfounded me. In Denmark about 85% of eligible voters vote in parlamentary elections. I myself have now voted in 6 parlamentary elections (held every 4 years as a general rule) and I have never ever dealt with line issues. We're talking an absolute maximum of 2-3 minutes of waiting in any of the elections I have participated in. It really should not be difficult for a modern civilized nation to provide enough voting booths for people to exercise their democratic rights without too much fuss.

One of the parties has a strategic interest in making it as hard as possible to vote. It's not a matter of wanting to but not being able to set up a reasonable voting system.

Random: Obama's latest status update is accumulating about 60 Likes per second on Facebook:

No Facebook updates from Mitt Romney's facebook page since yesterday afternoon.

Since 1:00 AM this morning, I have received three e-mails reminding me to vote.  I think I had about 7 prior to that.

Yeah, I've never really encountered much of a line either. But then again, the turnout in my precinct is usually 40%.

But you, and the Danish and we in Germany....etc., don't have partisan Republicans running elections designed to be as convenient as possible for their candidates.

There's also a significantly smaller amount of races on the ballot, at least here in Canada.

Yeah, here too. I have voted several times now in 2006, 2008 and 2009 and 2010 and as soon as I went in I was able to vote. I don't think that you have to wait 10 minutes or so even in bigger places like Vienna.

At mine, you get a line from 7-8 AM, and it has been smooth the rest of the day.

KYW has described a polling station in the Roxborough section of the city as "brisk."

We had some problems in Hessen in the 2008 election, I believe, when we did an experiment with electronic voting in certain precincts.

The machines broke down and caused waits up to 45 minutes.

We then decided...because of that among broader safety concerns....to never do it again.

The polls should be open until at least 9 PM everywhere.
