maybe because it wasa soild republican district and the democrats didn't want to waste there time or money there.

The district has twice as many Democrats as Republicans.

That would be CD-6? Currently represented by Ben Chandler (D-KY)?
KY-5 isn't having a Dem this year, BTW

I believe so. But in 2002, Ernie Fletcher had no Democrat running against him.

That's simply unacceptable.

That district includes heavily Democratic coal counties, and they need to find a candidate real quick - or the Republican should do the right thing and drop out of the race. That way, the seat will become vacant after this November, which would force a special election.

The Republican is Hal Rogers who's represented the 5th since the '80's (back when it didn't include the Coal counties).
It was "won" by Clinton twice and the Dems have a good chance at picking it up when he retires.
I think that the deadline for filing has closed in Kentucky (I'll have to check though).

The Dems didn't run a candidate against Fletcher in 2002... although Galbraith did again.

For not being in a major party, Galbraith did surprisingly well. Fletcher was so unpopular that I think Galbraith would have won if he had been the Democratic candidate.

Of course the "liberal" newspaper in Lexington endorsed Fletcher, using the excuse that third party candidates were "loose cannons".

Running unopposed and winning is not undemocratic. If a party doesnt feel it has a shot they don't have to run anyone. Kentucky is sort of backwater anyhow. Wink

It is when the seat is winnable for both parties (ala Virginia)... both the VADems and the VAGOP are guilty of that...

Running against a candidate when you don't have a chance at winning just wastes valuable Party resources.  Now that we have Campaign Finance Deform that discourages people from running against incumbents and takes money away from Parties that could help challengers -- expect it to happen less and less.

It's better for a Party to spend its resources on credible races.  If there is a lack of credible races, a Party should spend its money on party building, increasing membership, and hoping for a partisan shift Smiley

The problem with Virginia is that both Parties are so tight, they don't put up candidates in winnable seats...
