I've looked at some of the county maps from this site, and looking at the map of the 1960 presidential election results in my home state of Michigan, I can't help but wonder: how did Nixon carry Genesee County that year? If the union presence was as strong there as it was in Macomb County (which leaned strongly Dem at the time), then I would think that Kennedy should have carried it easily. That same year, I noticed when contributing the data for the gubernatorial election that the Republican candidate, Paul Bagwell, also carried Genesee County. Anybody out there think you know why? My guess is that the rural areas voted Republican in strong enough numbers to offset the Dem margins in Flint, but what do you think? Discuss.
