Obviously Obama becomes President, but what will the public reaction be like?

Massive Tea Party riots, and probably the abolishment of the electoral college by 2016

There will be howls and allegations of fraud.... just as there was after 2000... the GOP is butthurt for a while, then moves to abolish the EC.

But overall, since the far right thinks Obama is illegitimate anyway... it won't make that much difference.

House Republicans hold a vote to make select Romney as President. Obviously, that's not constitutional if Obama wins the electoral college, but I would expect them to try it if only for symbolic reasons.

Then, conservative sites would come up with various conspiracy theories.

A night of left-wing gloating and then, I fear, very very bad things. Ideally, it leads to a movement to abolish the electoral college, or worse, we end up with an even worse and more unrepresentative electoral system (by-district electoral votes), Republicans trigger horrible conspiracy theories and refuse to work with Obama on more than they already have, or, at worst, there are assassination attempts.

faithless electors swing presidency to Romney after massive astroturf anti-commmunist protests and threats of a capital flight-strike.

If that can warm republicans up to National Popular Vote, that will have accomplished something. Not wishing for it, of course.

BTW, this probability seems to be skyrocketing in the 538 forecast. It's 5.2% today while I believe it was only around 4% yesterday, and around 1-2% a week ago.

Even if he wins both... even a majority PV win, they won't respect the mandate... they didn't when he won a mini-landslide.

The Republicans will throw their empty chairs outside and try to abolish the electoral college. We cannot have anymore fraudulent elections in the future.

Yeah, we may finally see the end of the electoral college since it seems like the Democrats are the ones who want to abolish it now. Or, maybe the Democrats will do a 180 and defend it against the Republicans who will then want to end it.

I'll find the irony hilarious for a little bit, but then get pissed when the GOP becomes even more obstructionist.  It would be nice if it lead to a straight up national popular vote being used to elect the President, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Why is it that conservatives frequently feel the need to threaten violence when things don't go their way?

EDIT: Looks like I snatched that quote right before he changed it...

The Republicans know that they will never win an election if they abolish the Electoral College, so nothing will happen. They will sabotage any initiative by the President and make huge gains in 2014 midterms. They will win the 2016 Presidential Election.

It's pretty hard to distinguish when you're being sarcastic from when you're being mind-numbingly stupid.

It'll make the news for a while and then things will settle down, like they did in 2000. I can't imagine riots in the streets or anything that insane, but then again the Tea Party is a whole new animal.
