Establishing healthful habits is more important than closely tracking your daily calorie intake. Don't eat a "lunchable." Have an apple and some yogurt tomorrow instead. Keep doing whatever is easiest and cheapest and you'll be dead before you're 60.

Nix, an important thing to note is that there are short term and long term goals. You know who eats a lot of apples and yogurt and assorted health food, fat chicks.  The denial of comfort food altogether eventually leads people to gorge themselves on cake and completely stop altogether. You are not going to break 30 years of poor eating habits quickly.  By tracking his calorie count and exercising, he will run a deficit and he will lose weight. By losing weight and getting active his blood pressure will go down and his energy level will increase.  It will eventually get to where he will lose his taste for some of the artery clogging foods.  I really think you have to build up to certain things; you just don't flip a switch and start liking healthy food over Arby's overnight.

As they say, old habits die hard.

Wouldn't that be nice!!  If I could flip a master switch and all the old habits be dead, I would have done that years ago.  However, such as they may, I am having to go to the Old West Shootouts with each one of them.  I've encountered several wounds and had to take a leave of absence for 9 months, but I'm back with guns loaded!

Jeff, again when you go to Walmart check out the Healthy Choice meals. They are cheap, filling, and really easy to make. I have about 4 in my freezer here, and about 3 in my freezer in work in case I don't want to go out for lunch, and at home for if I don't get a chance to cook an actual dinner.

I will definitely be looking into Healthy Choice meals.

I've got a bit more calories in me today, around 1,200 currently through breakfast and lunch.  I'm still contemplating what to have for dinner.  As of this morning, I am down to 268 which puts me down 2 1/2 pounds total since Saturday.

Good news to report.  As of this morning, I have lost 3 pounds since last Saturday.  Its nothing to write home about, but it is an accomplishment.  I'm just keeping my calories under my goal of 2,500 and its working out fine for me.  I'm not losing weight rapidly, which is probably a good thing as it gives my body time to catch up, but I am losing.

As of this morning, I have now lost 5 pounds.  Again, I'm limiting my calories to 2,500 a day.

Given that calorie intake, it should be 1 pound or so (which is alright for 1 week). Don't expect to maintain the pound a day.

Considering weight maintenance for me is in excess of 3,000 calories, 2,500 calories is not much.  I don't expect to maintain the 3/4 - 1 pound a day for a long time.  I know there will be times where I lose less, lose more, hold steady, or even gain just a bit, despite my best efforts to lose the day before.  I just can't let the steady weight days or the small gains to deter me from my ultimate goal, which is to be down to 250 by my 31st birthday 5 months from today.

Ahem... You looked at the wrong menu items.  I always get 2 bacon, egg, & cheese biscuits for breakfast and a Double Quarter w/ cheese.  Since they took away my Diet Dr Pepper, I have to get a Coke.  I havent developed a taste for Diet Coke.

Ok, so be honest. How often do you get a double whatever? Hamburgers are super easy to cook. You can buy them already shaped at the grocery. Cook on stovetop at medium heat until done. Flip once. Ultimate bachelor food I like to throw in some chopped onions in the pan, but you don't have to do that. And it's much better than fast food burgers, which always have a strange fluffy consistency. You can get frozen fries also, which bake in about 15 minutes.  Much less grease than fast food. You'll save a few dollars too.

I do that with my George Forman. I put veggies in my ground beef and cook it in it.

I didn't have room in my car to bring my George Foreman in September.  I'm seriously thinking about buying another one.  They're not that expensive are they?

Just get a cheap frying pan at WalMart. Less than $5.

I already have a skillet.

Out of curiosity, what do you eat for breakfast and lunch on a normal workday?  Because I normally just have cereal (not the super sugary kind) for breakfast, then make a sandwich and eat that and an apple for lunch (sometimes substitute grapes or something in place of the apple).  I have no idea how many calories that is, but can't be that huge an amount.  Dinner's the only meal that I cook (or go out to a restaurant for, on the occasions when I do that).

Are you consuming a lot of calories already with breakfast and lunch, or is it mostly dinner + snacks?

On a work day, I generally don't eat breakfast and only an extremely light lunch like a couple ham sandwiches.  My main calorie heap is at dinner and the very light snacks I have in the day time or at bed time.  I generally will eat at home during the week and go to a sit down restaurant Friday night and occasionally Saturday morning.

How many ham sandwiches constitutes a big lunch?

Considering two sandwiches don't even come close to filling me up and I'm left hungry after just 30 minutes, I don't consider sandwiches in general except hamburgers, sub sandwiches, or hoagies to be a big lunch.  A big lunch is only slightly smaller than a big dinner since lunch food and dinner food are interchangeable.

How many ham sandwiches do you eat for lunch per day? Also please describe these sandwiches in greater detail.

I only eat 2 sandwiches, mainly for time and money's sake, and they only consist of bread, mustard, Oscar Meyer or Deli ham, and a slice of cheese.  Occasionally, I will substitute turkey for ham.  I don't get too fancy with my sandwiches.  I may include a few pickles if I'm eating them at home, but if I'm taking them to work, I will not include pickles because I don't want the pickle juice making the bread soggy.

Two sandwiches isn't unreasonable. It depends on the type of bread you use, but generally a bagged white/wheat/potato/etc. bread is 80 calories per slice, so you're at 320 for 4. One 2oz serving of ham or turkey is about 60, so now you're at 440. Cheese is much more calorie dense, and a lot of people will unintentionally go overboard with it, but one slice per sandwich is only a single serving of about 95-110. So now you're at.. 540 or thereabouts, maybe 570+ if you're using a more artisan style bread. Pickles and mustard are negligible. Consider them free vitamins. That's very easy to work into an 1800 calorie diet, let alone a 2500 calorie diet.

That's assuming your serving sizes for the meal are actually in order. They probably are, but to be sure of this stuff, consider purchasing a food scale. They're pretty cheap at amazon and eliminate all doubt about what you're actually consuming.

I typically just have regular store bought bread.  I used to eat the Wonder bread brand, but since Hostess closed its doors, I'm finding myself going to Walmart's Great Value Bread.

Polnut,

I will admit, I don't drink near as much water as I should.  Once in a while, I will have a glass, but I don't come anywhere near the 6-8 recommended glasses a day.

I know the purpose of a meal is not to fill me up, but sandwiches barely even satisfy, but I still stop at two. sandwiches every time I have them.

SPC and Inks,

The only diet I will even get anywhere close to touching is Weight Watchers, but even then I prefer to do things on my own terms.  I've lost 6 pounds in the past 7 days, so I'm not doing too terrible.

Changing the subject, but,

As the temperatures warm up this Spring and Summer, I am starting to plan out adventures around the Western United States. I plan to make a trip to Lake Powell on the Utah/Arizona state line at Page, AZ, I will make a trip to California both near Los Angeles and San Francisco, and I even make a trip to my brother's birth place in San Diego, I will have friends from high school who are moving from Florida to Spokane, Washington for military relocation, so I may make a trip into Washington State to either Spokane, maybe even Seattle. I may venture east into the Black Hills of Western South Dakota. Not all of these will happen in the Spring/Summer of 2013, and some will have to wait until 2014. I've got several places to go in the next 2-3 years!

I won't do anything until at least April 1, as the Winter is too unpredictable and too volatile around here.

I told Jeff how to lose weight  with a minimum of fuss. He ignored me. My pet theory is that at some level Jeff wants to be a fat - either to be a "victim," avoid the entanglements of sex and/or a serious relationship, etc. I do not find Jeff's protestations to the contrary to be persuasive.

Torie, you make it sound like can just casually have sex. We're not all wealthy retired men, you know. And don't play the old card- you're two years younger than my dad.

No, I think Bushie is just lazy.

Im losing weight and thats all that matters right now.

No, your weight is naturally fluctuating.

Oh come on.  6 pounds is not naturally fluctuating.  This forum is acting like 2,500 calories is gigantic.  DID ANYBODY NOT READ THAT MY WEIGHT MAINTENANCE IS 3,000+ AND 2,000 IS DANGEROUS???  This forum has no right to condemn me for every food choice I make.

We are NOT talking about this ANYMORE!!!  I changed the subject, but nobody is following my lead.

Bush- what matters more then weight is your happiness. If eating a carload of ham makes you happy- let it be... I know it makes me happy. Your happiness and enjoyment of life matter far more to your health then counting calories...

The rest of the forum doesn't believe that, or at least haven't mentioned it.

They also do not enjoy the photographs I send them- except for a few who do admit to liking a full-bodied woman

It's alright, though, because there is a better chance than not that I will never see any of my forum friends in person.  I've only seen Jamespol once since I've been here and that was 3 days after I got here on September 7, and I still have yet to see TexasIndy.  So, while I do value the advice of the forum, it is a matter of doing what is best for me in all aspects of my life, physically, spiritually, mentally, and emotionally.  I am losing weight, but by no means is that going to consume me.  If I want to go out to eat, I will go out to eat and not feel guilty about it.  I'll just hop back on the diet when I'm at home.

Just a heads up. I was in San Fran this summer. Walking around is pretty strenuous there because of the hills. And driving is very tricky due to density and lack of parking.  And hotels are crazy expensive.  Just a word of caution. The national parks in the Western states are fantastic though!!!

I'll probably start out by going to Las Vegas then down to Los Angeles and San Diego.  Then, I'll venture up toward Seattle and Portland.

I know SF will be very interesting, but I do plan on going there, if not in 2013, then maybe in 2014.  I do want to see the coastline whether that's in San Fran, LA, or San Diego.

I figure I will have 6 good months a year to do some sight seeing and traveling, April-September.  April could still be a little tricky especially early on with lingering snow chances in Salt Lake, but according to Jamespol, it warms up rapidly in April, so by mid month, I should be fine.

My 31st Birthday is on a Monday this year, so I may take a weekend drive somewhere to celebrate my birthday.  I won't be able to go home to Oklahoma for my birthday since I hope to be going home in June for a few days as my sister-in-law and niece may be coming down there in June.  My brother will be out to sea in June.  The thing is I can get to most places on the West Coast in a long day's drive.  Its about 750 miles to San Fran, 730 to San Diego, and 850 to Seattle.  I'm only 413 miles from Las Vegas, so I may go there for my birthday.  (No, I will not gamble).

The parks are great....but not if you only sit in your car.
I would prefer to get out and hike, but the scenery, even from the car, is spectacular. The National Park Service does a phenomenal job at making things accessible for people of all fitness levels. I will never forget taking the Beartooth Highway into Yellowstone and seeing the snow fall in July. Even a youtube clip of it is insane!

Yellowstone and Yosemite are on my places to go, as well, and I do not plan on sitting in the car.  I plan on parking somewhere and either walk, or take a tram, or something so I can feel the air be outside in God's creation.  That's part of the reason I'm trying to lose a little bit now, so when I do walk, I won't be huffing and puffing after 1/4 mile.

Not that I am not all in favor of casual sex, but I am not sure what casual sex has to do with the pursuing of intimate relationships to which I referred.  Casual sex even if Jeff were buffed city is not in accordance with his faith in any event - a faith which despite backsliding here and there he takes seriously.  It's apples and oranges.

By the way being buffed and 30 without much money is a much more effective calling card for sex than being buffed and 61 and with money. Time is a harsh mistress. Get it while you can is my motto. Money is not the universal solvent for all those little hurdles one faces in life. Who knew?

I am losing weight not for the sexual attractiveness, but for just being able to live and be able to walk in those national parks and on the streets of San Francisco without too much worry.  True, I would like to get married and have sexual relations with her someday, but even love is not a top priority for me right now, even though I am nearly 31.

Torie's right. You need to hone it to a point. gotten to the point where I decide "well, I want to have sex tonight," I can go out and get it done. What you need to do, bushie, is decide you want to lose weight. Why because you will die. Why don't I believe you? Because you've lied to us before. It doesn't affect me anymore, doesn't affect us- only you bushie can do it. Multiple sandwiches is not a light lunch. Wonder bread is not healthy. Go out, run,

have you had a walk since you last told us??

Sim, what part of changing the conversation do you not understand?  I'm not going to answer these questions, because the conversation has changed.
