Day is done and unfortunately, so is the week.  They are expecting such low call volume tomorrow that they gave half the staff the day off.  They asked for volunteers at first (I didn't volunteer), but couldn't get any volunteers so they started drawing names out of a hat and I was one of the unlucky ones whose name was drawn.  So, I've got an unwanted 3-day weekend.  They are expecting it to be much busier on Monday as it is the first Monday after the first paycheck of the year.  'Paycheck Mondays' as we call them are generally busier than the average day, but since its the first paycheck of the year, we'll get even more calls.  I've offered to work 2 hours overtime on Monday, but my supervisor doubts we'll need overtime, but I have offered just in case.

To be perfectly honest, I'm starting to get concerned.  They say we're supposed to get busier toward the end of January, but they've been wrong before.  In fact, everybody is getting a little nervous.

On this 3-day weekend, I'm seriously thinking about deploying my resources, again.  I'm not quitting unless they quit on me, but I'm thinking about getting a stand by ready to go just in case.  I can't keep losing a day or more every week.  I managed to get in 32 hours this week, which is more than I got all last pay period, but still its not the 40 that I wanted or needed.

On the topic of "fancy" buffets, I feel compelled to comment. The New Orleans Harrah's Casino Christmas buffet was disgusting! In one of the best culinary towns in America. It was like eating in an old folks home. Lesson learned.

You should have went to Besh's Steahouse at Harrah's Smiley  My daughter is a chef at one of his other restaurants.

I think that the best brunch I ever had was probably about 4 years ago, I went with my ex to Tavern on The Green in NY, and they had an amazing spread. I miss going there.

I had a friend whose Bar Mitzvah fell on Christmas Day many years ago. Rather than paying for a reception at the synagogue, his parents took all the guests out for Xmas brunch buffet at the Peabody, which is the grand old hotel in downtown Memphis. Very well played!!!!

If I ever do find myself in Memphis and am of the means, in addition to calling on you for a drink, I will make a point of staying in that hotel. It sure looks spectacular. Grand Old Hotels are the only type I stay in.

I did meet the Mayor of Chattanooga once, however.

Something more ethnic I could probably try, or something more expensive.. somewhere that I know some slob isn't going to take a bite of something, or pick it up and put it back. The only place I tend to go is at a chinese/japanese place, because I can keep going up when the sushi and sushmi are made and get it fresh, and cheap.

Stay away from Chinese buffets, especially the ones with crab legs and ice cream on the bar!

Haha, the one near us has a soft serve machine. I find that cool. I'm not really that big on ice cream, but I will always go for a nice little soft serve cone.

And for steak: http://hallschophouse.com

BTW, I love when you take charge Purple heart

I'm not going to worry about my job situation right now, because while it is slow and there is some angst among the agents, we have been given absolutely no indication of any possible layoffs.  We haven't been given job security promises, either.  They are still talking like it will be busier the second half of January as there is a January 31 deadline/changeover for Forest Service employees on one of their systems that people use quite often.  There is another deadline/changeover coming later in the Spring.  I think we'll get busier once we get far enough removed from the Christmas Vacation hangovers.  The fires last summer are what is causing this slowness by and large as it forced Forest Service Employees to delay their vacations.  The next logical time was the end of the year and I think President Obama and the US Department of Agriculture gave FS employees extra time to use their 2012 leave.

Maybe it's a rural or "middle America" thing? I don't know. But having lived in three liberal, urban cities in my life, finding self-serve salad bars in restaurants has been a rarity. I find that they're much more common when I'm visiting other places.

Perhaps a rich state / poor state thing, seeing as how poor states are more likely to be Republican?

Simfan, are you familiar with Canada's old railway hotels? Especially the Banff Springs Hotel and the Chateau Frontenac? Wow!!! I paid $15 just for the hour long guided tour of the Banff Springs. And worth every penny. I'm not sufficiently well to do to stay at a place quite that swanky, but my experience has been that old hotels usually have smaller rooms than I prefer. And old plumbing isn't ideal either. This was certainly my experience at the Francis Marion, which is a very decent old hotel in the very decent old town of Charleston, SC.

We need to get back on track with the life of Bushie. Lots of snow coming down under there.. I wonder how he is managing. Perhaps he didn't survive he half foot of snow.

I have survived.  We've got about a foot of snow sitting out there with heavy snow still falling.  It should keep falling all day today, and into tomorrow morning before lake effect bands set up.  Our NBC affiliate says we may not get out of it completely until Sunday morning.

I'm thankful right now they drew my name out of the hat to stay home today.  I would have tried to go, but it would have been a big challenge and I likely would have been a nervous wreck in just the 1.25 miles to get to work.  The roads should be clear by Monday.  Until then, I'm going nowhere this weekend.  Church on Sunday is looking a little suspect, as well, but I won't make that determination until tomorrow night.

The Airport has received 7.1", but they're usually one of the lowest amounts.  S Midvale/N Sandy has probably a foot out there with, again, more falling and more on the way.  They're trying to plow right now, but are fighting a losing effort for right now...

1.25 miles means you can never miss a day due to weather.  K? Thx.

When we had that late 2010 blizzard that was something like 22 inches and was the first time in 19 years the buses were pulled, I still drove to work, was sent home about two hours later, drove back home, and then walked close to 1.25 miles because the only place I could find to park was a ramp on the edge of downtown and as noted, no buses. Bushie needs to quit being a wuss.

Gramps and BRTD, when in that post did I say I would miss because of weather?  I can't find it.  But, as always, you twist my words around.  What I did say is I would attempt to go to work, but would be a nervous wreck all the way there.  That is NOT the same thing as missing work.  The only reason I am off today is because of the call volume.

It makes sense what you're saying, but my point was its not happening right now.

Anyway, I've got a possible Plan B in the works as far as my employment goes.  Its a little farther away in Salt Lake City, but it pays slightly more. 12.55 as opposed to 12.00.  No more details beyond that are known.  It is still a very new possibility.  I don't necessarily want to leave where I'm at, but if they keep cutting my hours then I'm not gaining anything, and in fact losing pace.  Plus, if the call volume does stay slow there is an increasing possibility of lay offs which may force me to find something else, anyway.  As far as the weather goes, that's not a real big concern for two reasons. 1) I've survived half the winter already and more importantly 2) I can ride the bus wherever I need to go.

If you live 1.25 miles from work, you can walk, the bus is faster certainly, but still.

Winter in Utah doesn't start on December 21.  It starts in October and ends sometime in March or April.
