46-43 Obama

Their previous poll from end-August was the exact opposite: Romney+3

I doubt Obama is ahead, but the fact that he is in striking distance tells you how much trouble Mitt is in.

NC is the swing state that takes a licking but keeps on ticking.

A year ago if someone suggested NC was going to be competitive in September where unemployment is still over 8% it would have seemed pretty far fetched. That being said I still think that Obama wont be spending much if anything in NC by election day on ads (but will still do GOTV)

Why not? You think it's a forgone conclusion for Romney?

He thinks that because that's the narrative the media is trying to push...

...in reality NC is looking better and better for Obama given Romney's collapse. Smiley

well there is the diminishing returns of TV time, plus NC is already doing early voting. His money is better spent on GOTV in NC as his only chance is based on high African american turnout. So spending money on trying to persuade the few remaining white voters just isn't worth it. That is all on top of the fact that its almost impossible to imagine a universe when Obama needs NC. he is mostly there to keep Romney on the defensive as Romney must win NC. Obama is already spending less in NC than he was in August, which was less than July. This is why GOP people are saying he is already doing a 'stealth withdrawal'. He is spending more in states half or a third the size like NV, NH, IA. And NC are about the same size in EV, but this week he is spending $3.4M in VA but less than $700k in NC

Karl Rove and other old hands in the GOP must be pounding their heads on their desks saying "FFS Mitt, can't you at least put NC to bed?"

Devils advocate / conspiracy theorist argument:

FOX's latest polls have been horrible for Romney across the board. Given that FOX certainly leans to the right, wouldn't this be the perfect setup for them to produce polls with Romney leads in mid-October so they can create a "ROMNEYMENTUM" narrative in time for election day?

(not saying I actually believe that will happen o/c, I just find it amusing how the most pro-Romney network has been putting out polls that are much worse for Romney than everyone else's.)

Actually they did something like that four years ago with their national polls. They showed Obama ahead by 9-10 points and then after a week they released a poll with a much more Republican sample which had McCain just 3 points behind.
